Red Roadster Classics (also known as Devon MG hire), grew from our passion for old British sports cars. There is nothing quite like exploring the beautiful English countryside of Devon, driving a classic car with the top down. You get to see, smell and experience things in a totally new way and often find that you plan your route around the positioning of large window panes in order to admire your reflection as you drive past…
Our cars were chosen for you, based on their - good looks, drivability, reliability and because we thought that you would like them. They are a range of colours and years, so there should be a car to please everybody. If the car you wanted is not in our collection please let us know and we will add it to our “wish” list, with the aim of adding the most requested car to our fleet in the future. If you are not sure which car to choose, you can always have a chat with us before booking or buy a Voucher for that surprise treat or a special occasion. Vouchers make a great gift for Birthdays, anniversaries, Fathers Day, or other special events and a memorable change to chocolates or socks!
The drive is very different from a modern car, more positive and you really feel at one with the road, the car and the environment. However, don’t forget that you need to alter your driving style accordingly as these cars do not have ABS or power steering. By being aware that you need to be braking earlier and paying more attention to what other drivers are doing - often they are busy admiring the car - you can compensate for the lack of modern technology.
Many ladies also enjoy the pleasure of driving a classic and we are very keen to encourage more women to try this for themselves. As our cars are quite nimble they are great for everybody, whether new to older cars or an experienced enthusiast. Our cars are professionally maintained by a local garage and have roadside / rescue back up just in case. All our cars have hoods and are great fun to drive throughout the year, particularly with the milder climate in the South West.
If you are thinking of buying your own classic car, why not try one of ours first to check to see which type best suits your needs. Or if you used to drive an old car or an MG come and relive the nostalgia, take one of ours out and enjoy a cream tea on your way back from a forest walk or a paddle in the sea.
We are Tim & Heidi, and we have been cruising around the Devon highways, b-roads and country lanes in our 1967 MGB for quite a while now. It has become more than a hobby and we are part of the Exeter Area MG Owners Club (www.exetermgoc.co.uk). We would like to share our passion for old English cars with you and to encourage others to enjoy the experience, and in turn keep Devon’s roads buzzing with classic cars.
Some of the practical bits
- You can leave you car with us in the secure car park, or we can meet you at an agreed destination.
- We are close to a bus route and about 10 minutes from the train station, so we can pick you up if needed or at an agreed place.
- Normally there would be no extra charge for delivery of the car to you or for picking you up, however if we need to travel for a long time or over a large distance we will agree a price with you beforehand.
- We welcome locals and visitors alike.
- You can freshen up and have some refreshments at our office, prior to receiving your familiarisation session with the car.
- All cars come with a full back up service, including breakdown recovery if needed.
- Where possible we will supply you with an alternative classic car, were there to be a problem with one of ours.
- Sat Nav systems are also available for hire.
- Our cars run on unleaded fuel and you start your journey with a full tank of petrol.
- Maps are included with the car and we are happy to provide “suggested” routes on request.
- All our cars and premises are strictly NO SMOKING, even with the top down.
- Please use soft bags for your luggage, as that will give you maximum space for storage.
- We advise you to wear comfortable shoes and avoid shoes that are quite wide or clumpy - because of the pedal spacing.
- Please allow enough time for a 15 minute familiarisation session prior to driving the car away.
- On the day of hire, we will need to take a pre authorisation on your credit card for the safety deposit of £500, this also acts as the insurance excess if required.
- If you have any special requirements please ask us and we can even organise a picnic hamper for you.
- You can take one of our cars on a non competitive classic car rally - dates and locations available - including a local monthly “run” in Devon.
- You can book online, by email or over the telephone.
- Vouchers are available and are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.
Please contact us, and we will be happy to answer your questions and tell you more about the cars and the surrounding Devon countryside and beaches.

A bit more about us
So how do you go about getting others to take part in your hobby, get them hooked and send them running to their nearest classic car dealer to make a life changing decision? At Red Roadster we have a few classics which we hope will launch your enthusiasm and help you begin that journey. Of course, you may only wish to experience the thrill of driving a classic car without the storage, maintenance and other issues involved, in which case we hope that there is something here for you.
We found ourselves also attracted to the social side of classic cars as well as the driving part of owning an MG. Part of the fun for us is participating in road runs and static car shows, because these events bring you together with like minded enthusiasts giving you the chance to see great cars and chat about your experiences.
So feel free to browse through our website and if you are looking for ideas try our “Getaways” and “Special Occasion’s” section or if you know what you want then you can book online, or for more information call or email us and we will be only too pleased to help.
Do you want to know the difference between a Classic, Vintage or Veteran?
As a rough guide the following may help:
Veteran - a car made before 1918
Vintage - often used to describe a car made prior to World War two
Classic - commonly referring to popular cars from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
